Notwithstanding the earlier descriptive accounts of the culture and society (Philby, Musil, Twitchell, Thomas, Thesinger, etc.) and more recent analytical works (e.g., Cole, Nomads of the Nomads, 1976), the field of Saudi Arabian ethnography remains woefully deficient.
