Filling a near empty niche in the literature, this journal is directed toward those specialists and professionals who labor with the problems of vegetable crop management from land preparation to seeding and consumption. The Journal of Vegetable Crop Production offers a forum in which these professionals can communicate their problems, concerns, and hopes while struggling to seek a better balance between maximizing profit and solving cultural problems at all levels of the chain, and at the same time reducing an ever-growing dependency on chemicals used in the industry. Currently environmentalists and informed consumers are sounding the alarm about many accepted practices in agriculture. If the vegetable industry is to survive as a major source of cheap human food, the reexamination of long standing practices and the return to in-depth husbandry without overriding legislative action to enforce it are imminent. The journal may well become an important vehicle for developing the essential balance in which yield, quality, and price will not be jeopardized. The journal provides a forum for the workers and doers who are striving to move the vegetable industry into a more integrated crop production format that will ensure continued viability for the industry without risking the environment as a whole. Innovative articles cover the wide spectrum of the vegetable industry. Papers about field-related problems, harvesting, shipping, and final consumption, together with scientific input about vegetables, provide growers, extension specialists, industry field personnel, marketing personnel, postharvest storage physiologists, engineers, transportation specialists, mission and basic scientists, and government administrators and legislators with a forum to express views, ideas, concepts, research findings, and marketing trends.
